The Adoption of Nicholas

The Adoption of Nicholas - We are excited to share our experience so far with adopting little Nico. It all started with God placing adoption on our hearts. Doug and I have been praying for God's will in our family for the last 6 months. We knew we wanted to add to the size of our current family but were unsure if God was leading us to have another biological child or to adopt. We were praying and talking with couples who had adopted, waiting for God's answer. I can not say we waited patiently! We really wanted God to show us His will and He just wasn't making it clear to us. Along came Mary. She is a professor at Calvin College who went to Ethiopia on a mission trip. She saw Nico in an orphange for about 5 minutes, but felt God had placed it on her heart to find a home for him. She in turn told a family at her church who in turn told my sister-in-law who shared it with us. At first we weren't sure but after much prodding from God all week, I contacted Mary for more information. After talking with Mary, we knew God placed Nico in our lives for a reason. Now we had to trust God would open the doors to help bring Nico here. We spent the next week making phone calls to Ethiopia. We had no idea how to start the adoption process since we wanted to adopt a specific child, Nico. With most international adoptions, the child is selected by the government and not the adopting parents. With much frustration, we did not get very far! After a lot of prayer, we found a list of agencies in the U.S working with Ethiopia. We left messages with 3 adoption agencies with no calls back. We then got in contact with Scott Brown at Gladney Center for Adoption. We now know why the other agencies didn't call us back. We feel God has led us to Gladney to help us through the adoption process of Nico. We were a little concerned since Gladney is out of state for us, but they have made the process easy. The paperwork has been time consuming, but with the help of Gladney we've made it through so far! Finding out more information about Nico has only made God's plan more clear and our love for him grow even more! He was orphaned at 2 months of age, weighing in at a whopping 5 lbs! He has had pneumonia twice, almost dying the second time. He is slowly gaining weight and now at almost 9 months of age weighs 12.5lbs! What a little peanut! On Friday, September 22 Scott e-mailed us our first glimpse of Nico! We had tears in our eyes as we looked for the first time what Nico looked like. Our girls are so excited to have a new baby brother and carry pictures of him around wherever they go. This adoption experience so far has been amazing for our family. We know God has placed little Nico in our lives for a reason with hopes it is for him to find a home here with us! Jeremiah 29:11-12 keeps coming to our minds, "For I know the plans I have for you," declares the Lord, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you a hope and a future. Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you." We are continually praying for Nico's safety and health, Gladney and the hand they have in this adoption, and for God to open doors to bring Nico to our family! We will give an update as soon as we have any new news!

On December 6, 2005, the Gladney Center for Adoption received approval to facilitate adoptions in Ethiopia. Many heart-warming stories have occurred since then in the lives of prospective adoptive parents and the children of Ethiopia.

This blog will give you a glimpse into a family's passion to complete their family through the adoption of Nicholas.
